2012 Science Project Update

Hi there!

Remember a few post ago I told you about my science project and I promised to keep you updated.

Well we have now completed testing on the hair and have experimented with all volumes of hydrogen peroxide (10,20,30,40). We noticed that the higher the volume of the peroxide the more damaged the hair becomes. Furthermore we decided that would would attempt the experiment with lemon juice as we are aware that many people lighten their hair by sitting in the sun with lemon juice on their hair. We found that the lemon juice also does damage to the hair and can be compared to the damage done with 10 and 20 volume hydrogen peroxide. So lemon juice would be roughly equal to a "15 volume" peroxide.

I am sure you're asking yourselves how we know that the hydrogen peroxide does damage. Well we asked our science teacher if we could use a microscope but unfortunately she did not have one. She said however that she knows a high school teacher that has a microscope. We arranged to visit the lab and were able to look at the hair under a microscope.

After a few days of working in the lab we decided that we should take our project to the next level. So we started experimenting on dog hair and the results were exactly the same! In light of this fact I have come to the conclusion that dogs are in fact allot smarter than humans as I have never seen a dog getting highlights in the salon.

I am so upset and thought that I should save the worst news for last.
There were NO explosions...*sigh*

Sneaky Planet Venus!

On April 14th the Planet Venus decided to play a trick on a pilot. A late April fools perhaps? We all know how sneaky planets can be!

A first officer took a nap while in flight (which is legal for 40 minutes at a time). He overslept slightly (75 minutes) and woke up dazed and disoriented and saw a bright light in front of the plane. He assumed that it was another airplane. He sent the plane into a nosedive to avoid a collision. The bright light turned out to be the Planet Venus!

We should all be thankful that he didn't see Uranus!

First Meeting with the TS authors

So last night I had my first meeting with the crew from teenskepchick.org. It was really great to see them in action - especially since they type so much faster than I do - I am such a typing noob. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly. Since it was my first time in the meeting I did not chat much but I am sure I will get the hang of it soon.

My  first official post is scheduled for May 3rd so be on the lookout and thanks for making me feel welcome guys!

PS: here ia a link to the guest post I did for them during the "interview" stage.

YES!! I made it.

I get to write for teenskepchick!!

Some time ago teenskepchick put up a post titled: Help Wanted. My mom who follows teenskepchick told me about the post and suggested that I should apply, and so I did. Mindy from TS sent me an e-mail saying I must show her some of my writing, so I sent her a link to my blog. A few days later I got another e-mail from Mindy saying that I was in the second round. I was so happy to hear those words. The reason I was so happy is because I thought that I was too young BUT obviously they decided to give me a chance.

So for the second round I had to write a guest post on a topic of my choice. You can read my guest post here. Mindy sent a response on the 4th of April but unfortunately I was at my grandmothers house and didn't get the e-mail until today. I was very pleased with what Mindy said in the response.

What it comes down to is that I get to be a writer for TS but due to my age I will not have access to the e-mail list so i dont have to get caught up in adult conversations. I am super excited to be writing with all the talented peeps there!

In the words of my late uncle Warren: BOOYAKASHA!!!!

HHMI Rocks!

My order of DVD's have just arrived from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute!!!!!

14 DVD's on various topics in the sciences...where to begin? Well obviously I started with one on Evolution and learned a lot about Darwin. Who would have believed that he wanted to be in the clergy??

Some of it is pretty much Greek (or Spanish, French, Mandarin and all the other languages I do not speak) to me considering that it is not geared for 11 year olds  but man I am so excited. The cool thing is that I learn what I can and I can watch the lectures over and over and as I grow older will understand more and more of what they discuss :)

YAY for super cool free resources - Go order yourself some now!
